This is the perfect drink to sip on in the evening, not only does it give you that feeling of unwinding with a glass of wine, it will actually help you to sleep. That’s right! Magnesium has been shown to help you sleep longer and more efficiently (ie. in bed sleeping as opposed just lying in bed!).

It regulates your body’s neurotransmitters (like GABA) which essentially lets your brain begin to “power-down” for the evening, as well as melatonin (the hormone that controls the sleep-wake cycles in the brain). It also helps to balance your nervous system by slowing the heart rate, relaxing the systems in the body and allowing it to prepare for sleep. Sounds heavenly, right?

This recipe was discovered by my mom, who found it while flipping through, Naturally, Danny Seo, and has since been approved by several friends and family members!

Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 5 shakes grapefruit or orange bitters
  • 16 ounces sparkling water
  • 1 dose (typically around 350 mg) of powdered magnesium (the lady who wrote the article, as well as myself, like Natural Calm in orange, but she also recommended Thorn Magnesium Bisglycinate powder which is sweetened with monk fruit concentrate – I haven’t tried the Thorn one)
  • Pinch of orange zest (optional)

Directions

  1. Pick out two of your favourite wine glasses and fill them with ice.
  2. Squeeze the juice out of half of the orange into each glass.
  3. Add grapefruit bitters, sparkling water, magnesium, and orange zest.
  4. Stir until all ingredients are fully incorporated and enjoy chilled.
  5. If you’re feeling fancy, top with an orange slice!

Pro Tip from Paige Munn: for a Cherry Spritz, swap the orange for 3-4 ounces of tart cherry juice and sub cherry magnesium. In addition to promoting sleep, tart cherry juice is great for reducing inflammation!
